The Tutudesk Campaign was started by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and has continued under the leadership of his daughter, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe with the key mission to provide 20 million Tutudesks to African school children by 2025.

Chester Rotary Celebrates Founder's Night
On Saturday, February 29th, 2020, The Rotary Club of Chester Celebrated Founder's Night, an evening of celebration and tribute. During this annual event we Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present and Look to the Future. This year's event took place at the Chester Courtyard by Marriott.

Elizabeth Scott Community Night
Rotarians Jeff & Carolyn Jacobs took the time to set up a table at Elizabeth Scott Elementary School's Community Night. During Community Night, students visit tables from local non-profits in their community to learn about how they serve their community and support the citizens. Students travel around the cafeteria with a game card. Organizations have stickers that a student must earn at each station by the student asking questions about the organization. Students who visit 6 stations and ask questions will be entered into a raffle drawing to help encourage them to speak to all the organizations.

Alamo Addiction Recovery Center Receives $11,000 Grant
Today, Board Members and the Executive Director of Alamo Addiction Recovery Center, welcomed a donation from a Rotary District 7600 grant approved for Chester Rotary and the Rotary Club of Prince George County. Volunteers had contributed sweat equity to improve the 1840s home and now this grant will assist with electrical repairs to make the home more safe for all. Attending today were Board President Jeff along with Board members Pat, Renee, and Brenda and CiCi Claiborne, Executive Director. Chester Rotary President Jeff Jacobs, Carolyn, and Robin Daniels were joined by AG Shel Douglas, Donna, and Jan from the PG Rotary.

Chester Rotarians Volunteer 3,338 Service Hours
From July 2019 through December 2019, Chester Rotarians volunteered 3,338 service hours to charity. This included building handicap ramps for those in need, delivering food, helping Chesterfield County Public School students, donating to Polio Plus and the YMCA, helping out the Alamo Addiction and Recovery Center as well as Jackson Feild Behavioral Health, supporting Tri-Cities Workcamps and ChesterFest and raising money through Happening on the Green.

Chester Rotary Receives Multiple Awards
On December 18, 2019, Chester Rotary received multiple performance awards from the district for the 2018-2019 Rotary year during our weekly meeting. Awards included 100% participation for $100 average giving and $100 per capita, $250 per capita club award and the End Polio Campaign.

Delegate Kirk Cox Visits
On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Delegate Kirk Cox stopped by the Chester Rotary Meeting to speak to us about the future of Virginia and how it impacts us. We greatly appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to visit us.

Rotary 2019 Christmas Party
Although Chester Rotary is all about "Service Above Self," we did take the time to come together as a club and celebrate the Christmas Season. What a better way to rejoice than with your Rotary brothers and sisters with their families. We had food, fun and fellowship. The Dictionary Project
Chester Rotarians delivered dictionaries to every 3rd grade student a 7 local elementary schools in the Chester area as part of the yearly Dictionary Project. Local schools included: CC Wells, Curtis, Ecoff, Elizabeth Scott, Enon, Harrowgate and Marguerite Christian Elementary Schools.

Rotarians Volunteer at the Chesterfield Food Bank
Rotarians came out in droves from the Chester Rotary Club to volunteer and help those in need in our local community. There are families in our shared communities that go to bed hungry every night. Chesterfield Food Bank strives to stop that from happening. They proudly serve a variety of our neighbors, the majority of whom do not qualify for government assistance. These include: single mothers working to try to put food on the table, senior citizens surviving solely on social security, veterans on disability, young couples just starting out and people who have just been laid off from their job.

Remembering the life of Thomas Alva Michener
Thomas Alva Michener, died Sunday, October 20, 2019 peacefully following a long battle with a chronic illness. Tom was born September 22, 1946, the oldest of five children and the only son to the late Glenn Allen and Ida Mae Powers Michener. He attended Bowling Green State University. After working several management positions for several retail stores, Tom found his passion as a realtor and worked in the Southside Richmond area.Tom was a former member of the Jaycees and an active member of the Chester Rotary Club where he served for several years as Sergeant at Arms and helped coordinate events such as the annual “Grilling on the Green”.

Alamo Addiction Recovery Center Service Project
Rotarians-At-Work! Rotarians at mutiple clubs showed up for a service project in Petersburg, VA today. They helped by painting and assisting with repairs at the Alamo Addiction Recovery Center.

ChesterFest 2019
Rotarian John Philipkosky is holding down our Rotary booth at ChesterFest 2019. Rotarians worked all day meeting members of the community telling them about Rotary and how we support our community. We also raffled off two great prizes for people to win.

District Governor Visit Award Meeting
District Governor Clenise Platt visits Chester Rotary Club to talk about the future of our district and help present some awards. Rotarian of the year was presented to Dick Slinkard along with three new Paul Harris Fellows. Rotarian Jeff & Carolyn Jacobs granddaughter, Savannah Barfield, Hopewell United Methodist Church Kingdom Seekers, Gil Shand and Rotarian Goldie Weaver.

Chester Rotary Builds Cornhole Boards for Jackson Feild Youth
The Chester Rotary made and donated six cornhole board sets to the youth residents of Jackson Feild Behavioral Health. Most of the work was completed but that last bit of assembly was done onsite with the residents. Afterwards, there was a small presentation and dessert social for everyone. |
Chester Supports 2019 Tri-Cities Workcamp
The week of July 22-26, 2019, Chester Rotary helped support the Tri-Cities WorkCamp program by providing lunches to the students, mentors, volunteers and homeowners each day. This year, we sponsored two different crews working on two different homes. These students work all day in the sun and without air condition to help rehabilitate homes in the Tri-Cities area. They do this trough their church program and spend a week of their summer vacation to serve people in our own backyard.

Change of Watch (C.O.W.)
Change of Watch is our end of the year party celebrating the end of another Rotary Year. Rotarian Rich Chandler and his wife Cindy were gracious to host us. There was food, fun and fellowship as we celebrated all we have accomplished. 4 Rotarians became Paul Harris Fellows and President Elect Jeff Jacobs was sworn in and gave his Inaugural Address.

2019 Dictionary Project
Chester Rotary provides all 3rd grade students at local elementary schools dictionaries. Every year, Rotarians in Chesterfield County provide all 3rd grade students with their very own personal dictionary to take home and use.

Chester Rotarians watch the Richmond Flying Squirrels play at the Diamond on Rotary Night. Proceeds of all tickets sells go to the Polio Plus Foundation which is fighting to End Polio Worldwide.

Happening On The Green (H.O.G.) is an annual community fundraiser event sponsored by The Rotary Club of Chester each May on a Thursday from 5:00-8:30 pm. Although the format and history has changed over time, the fun and community participation has not. Each year we have a catered BBQ meal, Hotdogs, Ice Cream, Cookies, Popcorn, Drinks and All You Can Drink Beer. We always have live entertainment, vendors and activities for the kids. Our event is rain or shine, and for the most part, we luck out. The event is held in the Chester Village Green in Chester, VA. Planning normally starts in February so if you would like to participate or sponsor the event, check back on our site in February. We look forward to seeing you and your family at next year's event! All proceeds from Happening On The Green go to support local charities in your community |
President Elect Jeff Jacobs Attends Chesapeake PETS
President Elect Jeff Jacobs spends the weekend training. Chesapeake PETS (Presidents-Elect Training Seminar) brings together more than 200 club Presidents-Elect from four districts surrounding the Chesapeake Bay: Rotary Districts 7600, 7610, 7620, and 7630. This dynamic training event provides a unique experience of learning from Rotary leaders, sharing with peers, fellowship, and enhancing qualities of leadership.

Rotarians Stuff Book Bags
On Wednesday, August 22, 2018, Chester Rotary supported The YMCA's Bright Beginnings Program by stuffing over 100 book bags with school supplies for needy elementary students. The YMCA Bright Beginnings program ensures children in our community are prepared and confident for the school year by providing them with school supplies. They are also given quality time with their Shopping Buddy as they look for two new outfits, shoes, socks, underwear, a new jacket, and share a meal.

1st Fridays Reading Program
Members of Chester Rotary volunteer their time to read to local elementary students at Marguerite F. Christian Elementary School. Through a program called 1st Fridays, voulenteers go to local elementary schools to read to students. Each visit, the students get a copy of the book that was read.

Chester Rotary sponsors local Thomas Dale High School Interact student to attend district conference in November. Chester Rotary is a proud supporter of TDHS's Interact club and partners with them on multiple project throughout the year.
